This film is visually entrancing (the sequences set at the track are sufficiently stimulating, chaotic and noisy with furious angle cuts to engage your basic attention-deficient kid) and often slyly comic (because there are only cars in this world, tractors do the work of farm animals and one popular prank is tipping over tractors) and generously garnished with characters that can be personable (the wonderfully naive beat-up pick up voiced by Larry the Cable Guy is as endearing and appealing as any Disney character since Thumper). But it lectures, often heavy handedly, about a lost America, dated here to the mid-1950s, a world of caring neighbors, a slow down, small-town world of simple pleasures like a slow drive in the country, where love was expressed in batted eyes and stammering speech. Granted that 1950s is a confection of Hollywood and perhaps it is an exercise in pointless nostalgia to mourn something that never really existed, it works here. When Lightning McQueen, the showboat hot-shot race car (Owen Wilson), loses a big race (his daredevil antics on the track cost him the victory) and decides brashly to eschew his racing team to head alone to the season-ending showdown race for the Piston Cup, he gets lost on a stretch of back highway, the mythic Route 66, in the deserts somewhere on the way to California. He ends up in a lonesome town, Radiator Springs, itself a cross of intersections bypassed long ago by the interstate and now settling into dust. When Lightning ends up impounded in the town and then sentenced by an unforgiving old-timer judge (Paul Newman) to community service–he must repave the stretch of broken-down highway his race car has damaged–the young kid comes to understand, slowly, the simple values that his media-driven celebrity lifestyle and virtually impenetrable narcissism have never shown him: friendship, trust, honesty. Happily, the judge turns out to be himself a relic of past racing glory and with his help and his patient (although wonderfully gruff) instruction the kid learns a thing or two about handling cars. When Lightning returns to race, he does so richly educated in the importance of tradition, the value of modesty, and the sterling quality of friendship. I would not dream of spoiling the end of the film, but in the end we learn, as with all truly significant sports films, what happens in competition pales next to the significance of what happens off field. With Lightnings newfound sensitivity, the town finds its way to a renaissance that is as believable as it is heartwarming.

In the early 1990s, there was speculation that silicone implants might be the cause of immune system disorders. There has been much litigation on this issue, however, research has shown these disorders to occur no more often in women with implants than in women without implants.(3) For most of the nearly 40-year history of breast augmentation with silicone implants, the incision locations have been in the inframammary crease, the axilla, and around the nipple-areola (Figure 1). All three approaches permit the placement of both saline-filled or silicone gel-filled implants in front of or behind the pectoralis muscle (Figure 2). These three incision sites, however, leave visible scars. Recent developments in endoscopic instrumentation have enabled surgeons to perform many types of surgical procedures through small incisions located at a distance from the surgical site.

LIVERMORE — Cleanup crews from the Environmental Protection Agency contained a mercury spill Thursday that ended up in a carport and gutter in a Livermore neighborhood. At about 3 p.m. Wednesday, authorities received reports of metallic-like beads in the gutter in front of the 900 block of Olivina Avenue, said Glen Haendel of the Livermore Fire Department. Richard Martyn, an on-scene coordinator for the EPA, said the thousands of beads were roughly the size of pinheads.

Real estate practice is a broad and widely defined area of the law. In a pristine sense it deals with the esoteric subject of real property law and titles. In practice the subject matter handled by real property lawyers is much broader. Many of the areas of law within real estate practice are areas of specialty themselves. Real estate lawyers examine and evaluate real property titles, handle real estate sales, purchases and other transactions, foreclose mortgages, represent developers and contractors in drafting and negotiating development and construction agreements, handle real estate financing, structure and draft the governing documents for planned developments such as condominiums, serve as counsel to community and condominium associations, draft and negotiate leases, litigate title, boundary, and other land disputes, and advise clients respecting zoning and land: use matters. The examination of real estate titles requires knowledge of corporations and other forms of business organization, wills, trusts and estates, and a practitioner handling transactions must understand contractual, business, and tax subjects as well. The subjects that are tested on the certification exam attest to this diversity. They are title issues; real estate finance; environmental and land use; condominiums and homeowner associations; landlord tenant; closings; sellers, buyers, brokers, and title insurers; real property litigation; taxation of entities and other tax issues; and ethics. Some hold an impression that at least some aspects of the real estate practice are not challenging, that the practice is increasingly title company, form, and paralegal driven, and that when business is light any lawyer with a good paralegal can Ado real estate closings. This impression is not accurate. As with any area of practice, successfully representing clients in real estate matters requires knowledge, skill, and experience. The diversity in real estate practice may mean that no one lawyer can be an expert in each practice area encompassing the modern real property practice or that are tested by the certification program. They argue that, if marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs were legalized, several positive things would probably occur: (1) drug prices would fall; (2) users would obtain their drugs at low, government-regulated prices, and they would no longer be forced to resort to crime in order to support their habits, (3) levels of drug-related crime, and particularly violent crime, would significantly decline, resulting in less crowded courts, jails, and prisons (this would allow law-enforcement personnel to focus their energies on the “real criminals” in society); and the drug production, distribution, and sale would no longer be controlled by organized crime, and thus such criminal syndicates as the Colombian cocaine “cartels,” the Jamaican “posses,” and the various “mafias” around the country and the world would be decapitalized, and the violence associated with drug distribution rivalries would be eliminated. By contrast, the anti-legalization camp argues that violent crime would not necessarily decline in a legalized drug market. In fact, there are three reasons why it might actually increase. First, removing the criminal sanctions against the possession and distribution of illegal drugs would make them more available and attractive and, hence, would create large numbers of new users. Second, an increase in use would lead to a greater number of dysfunctional addicts who could not support themselves, their habits, or their lifestyles through legitimate means. Hence crime would be their only alternative. Third, more users would mean more of the violence associated with the ingestion of drugs. These divergent points of view tend to persist because the relationships between drugs and crime are quite complex and because the possible outcomes of a legalized drug market are based primarily on speculation. However, it is possible, from a careful review of the existing empirical literature on drugs and violence, to make some educated inferences.

They argue that, if marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs were legalized, several positive things would probably occur: (1) drug prices would fall; (2) users would obtain their drugs at low, government-regulated prices, and they would no longer be forced to resort to crime in order to support their habits, (3) levels of drug-related crime, and particularly violent crime, would significantly decline, resulting in less crowded courts, jails, and prisons (this would allow law-enforcement personnel to focus their energies on the “real criminals” in society); and the drug production, distribution, and sale would no longer be controlled by organized crime, and thus such criminal syndicates as the Colombian cocaine “cartels,” the Jamaican “posses,” and the various “mafias” around the country and the world would be decapitalized, and the violence associated with drug distribution rivalries would be eliminated. By contrast, the anti-legalization camp argues that violent crime would not necessarily decline in a legalized drug market. In fact, there are three reasons why it might actually increase. First, removing the criminal sanctions against the possession and distribution of illegal drugs would make them more available and attractive and, hence, would create large numbers of new users. Second, an increase in use would lead to a greater number of dysfunctional addicts who could not support themselves, their habits, or their lifestyles through legitimate means. Hence crime would be their only alternative. Third, more users would mean more of the violence associated with the ingestion of drugs. These divergent points of view tend to persist because the relationships between drugs and crime are quite complex and because the possible outcomes of a legalized drug market are based primarily on speculation. However, it is possible, from a careful review of the existing empirical literature on drugs and violence, to make some educated inferences.

Not all sheds are created equal This one was a plain box of a building before landscape architect Eddie Browder of Hugh Dargan Associates got hold of it. Tucked in the back corner of Bill and Nancy Kellmans yard in the historic district of Charleston, South Carolina, this shed is a catchall for bicycles, pet food, and garden tools.Design tricks transformed the shed but left the original structure intact. “Rafters are an easy way to make a building look bigger,” Eddie says. “We added decorative columns to the front, which support a front beam.” The rafters extend beyond the front of the shed and rest on the beam. The bottoms of the rafters are angled to rest on the roof.Custom lattice helps brighten the face of the shed. In the center of each lattice grid, an oval porthole peeps through pink blossoms of Belinda climbing rose. The oval is actually lightweight polymer window trim, capable of withstanding any weather. It is insect resistant and comes preprimed. The Kellmans painted theirs to match the lattice.

Exercise and Cancers: Research Opportunities for Health-Related Fitness ScientistsRepresentatives from the American Cancer Society (ACS), the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will challenge AAHPERD members to contribute to cancer prevention and control, describing the most promising research opportunities and resources to support investigation of the relationships between cancers and exercise. The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Blood samples were taken from 50 veiled and 22 unveiled Kuwaiti volunteers between the ages of 14 and 45 (mean 35.5 years). All of the women had been pregnant no more than three times, were from the middle or high socioeconomic classes, did not have black skin, and included milk and milk products in their diets. Plasma levels of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (vitamin D) were found to be significantly lower in the veiled than in the unveiled women (mean 14.4 vs. 30.2 pmol/L). Serum inorganic phosphorus was also significantly lower in the veiled women, but no significant differences were observed in serum calcium or alkaline phosphatase levels. Forty-three (86%) of the veiled women, but none of the unveiled women, had below-normal levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D. Sixteen (320A) of the veiled women and two (9.1%) of the unveiled women had high serum alkaline phosphatase levels. Two previously unsuspected cases of vitamin D deficiency osteomalacia were identified in the veiled group. These two women, like the four previously identified cases, responded well to the administration of vitamin D, thus confirming that vitamin D deficiency was the cause of their osteomalacia.
The risk of rectal cancer, especially in older women, may be linked to a low intake of vitamin E, according to a report published in the American Journal of Epidemiology (2004;159:32-41). Antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin E are believe to neutralize free radicals in the digestive tract and prevent cellular damage. Women showed the largest association between antioxidants and rectal cancer risk. Women with the lowest vitamin E levels were found to be more than twice as likely to have rectal cancer than women with the highest levels. Women with the lowest intakes of lycopene, and antioxidant carotenoid, were also found to be 70 percent more likely to have rectal cancer.
This report describes six cases of hypovitaminosis D in women who had immigrated to The Netherlands from Morocco (two cases), Pakistan (two cases), Surinam, or Turkey. In all six cases, there was a long delay (7 to 103 months) between the onset of symptoms and the correct diagnosis. All of the women were subjected to multiple diagnostic tests, X-rays, and treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and other medicines, four underwent extensive physiotherapy, and one with stomach pains underwent unnecessary surgery because her symptoms were believed to be due to gallbladder disease.The authors conclude that hypovitaminosis D osteopathy in women who have immigrated to Western Europe may remain undiagnosed for an unacceptably long time. Although Tanzanias standard of care recommends that children receive a dose of vitamin A every six months, trial results showed that maternal vitamin A supplementation increased HIV transmission to children. The studys data and safety monitoring board recommended that vitamin A be discontinued from the trial regimen in September 2000. The researchers note in their article, Among HIV-infected US men, the relationship between vitamin A intake and HIV disease progression and mortality was U-shaped, suggesting that both low and high levels of intake are potentially harmful. The group that received multivitamins had higher CD4+ levels and significantly lower viral loads than those on placebo. (Vitamin A combined with the multivitamin was less effective.) Women taking the multivitamin had less fatigue, fewer acute upper respiratory tract infections, fewer rashes, and fewer oral and gastrointestinal problems associated with HIV/AIDS. These women were also less likely to reach WHO stage 4 or die of AIDS-related illness than those taking a placebo. I wonder if the inclusion of minerals known to support the immune system (i.e., selenium, zinc) in the multivitamin formula would increase this benefit. TUCSON, ARIZ. — Customary vitamin D supplementation and springtime sun exposure in the southern United States are inadequate to protect elderly African American women from vitamin D deficiency, data from a prospective cohort study show. Darker skin pigmentation and aging are known to decrease the bodys ability to synthesize vitamin D. But it has generally been assumed that sun exposure in southern latitudes is either sufficient to provide adequate vitamin D levels or would reduce the need for supplementation. The study has huge clinical implications and supports the belief of a growing number of clinicians that the recommended daily allowance of 400 IU vitamin D supplement is too low, Dr. Weaver said in an interview. The study included 44 African American women living in central Texas who were given 1,000 mg of calcium with 400-IU vitamin D tablets daily for 6 weeks, and told not to make any changes in diet or sun exposure. Clinical evaluations were made at baseline in April and 6 weeks later in June.
