Perhaps the most stimulating section, on Vivaldis use of the flute and recorder in vocal music, explored virtually uncharted territory. The translation retains the books division into two parts, of disparate length (54, 134 pp.). In part I, The Recorder and Flute in Italy in Vivaldis Time, Sardelli looks at the social, musical, and organological evidence for the presence of the instruments, both in the country and in Vivaldis life. This skillfully assembled mass of evidence supports Sardellis novel reversal of the received scholarly view that, rather than writing for the recorder in the first two or three decades of the eighteenth century, then switching over to the flute, Vivaldi already preferred the flute in the 1710s and did not start writing for the recorder until the early 1720s. In part II, on the music, Sardelli devotes chapters to the sonatas, chamber concertos, flute concertos, recorder concertos, concertos for flautino, concerto for two flutes, concertos with multiple soloists and orchestra, and finally vocal music. I was especially taken by his evidence and arguments that Vivaldi himself taught the flute and had an insiders view of the technique of both instruments. The section showing how Vivaldi reworked the C minor recorder concerto from the violin concerto, RV 202, blends musicological and practical considerations in a masterly way. Sardelli has had two particular advantages in his research. The first is a special kind of bibliographical control: my own, still unpublished, catalogue of Vivaldis self-quotations–a massive accumulation. which I hope will appear in print before long (pp. xvi-xvii). The book is living proof of Sardellis opinion that critical analysis of the dense network of borrowings, reworkings and quotations that pervade the entire output of the composer can play its part. in establishing more firmly the chronology and filiation of the sources (p. xvii). Second, Sardelli has had private access to Peter Ryoms forthcoming large and complete version (Grosse Ausgabe) of his monumental catalogue, the Verzeichnis der Werke Antonio Vivaldis, which is soon to appear from Breitkopf Hartel (p. xvii).
BARTOK Royal Philharmonic / Gatti Conifer 75605 51324 2 Nothing if not a confident choice with which to celebrate your new orchestra, your new recording contract. If youve a mind to show off, then you do so in the best of company with Bartoks Concerto for Orchestra. Characteristically, though, Gattis Bartok is more about drama than display. And thats more of a novelty than you might think. Bartok so often gets left behind in performances of the Concerto. So often its about sound not because of sound. So often the music is subsumed by the special effects. The shows the thing. Not here. Gattis “Introduzione” at once opens magic casements on to the concerto beyond. Muted string tremolandi are drawn like a veil over the opening pages, the violas sul ponticello adding a touch of frost. The solo flute is pale and very interesting. Not a bar, not a note goes by that doesnt convey something. The intrigue of a first encounter, thats the spirit. So those little oboe and/or clarinet and harp diversions in the first movement come on like ancient airs and dances; so there is nothing remotely faceless about the woodwind “couplets” of the second movement; so the third movement “Elegia” stretches and intensifies the dynamic possibilities, suggesting a lake of tears to shame even Bluebeard, with ardent violins pulling more sound up from their bottom strings than Ill wager even they thought they had. When did you last hear the cor anglaiss plangent canon to the lyric main theme of the “Intermezzo interotto” sound this purposeful? And since when did Till Eulenspiegel get to play tag with the Shostakovich “Leningrad” theme? All right, so the finale sacrifices fire to the rustico character of the music (presto? hardly), so youre listening to the Royal Philharmonic thinking of the Chicago Symphony. But theres more music being made here than in the average Concerto for Orchestra - and thats a fact. The Divertimento, meanwhile, is further testament to Gattis work in progress with the RPO strings. Folk dance and fiddling are at the heart of this piece, the character once again dictating the sound. Which is just as it should be and so rarely is. Edward Seckerson
Performing Music in the Age of Recording. By Robert Philip. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2004. [vii, 293 p. ISBN 0-300-10246-1. $35.00.] Music examples, index. The basic premise of Philips book is that recordings have not only had an effect on the style of performance but on the actual level of performance standards, and on the expectations of the listener. The first chapter, recounting the life of the musician in the nineteenth century, emphasizes the lack of opportunity to hear not only the great performers of the era but also to hear major musical works as they were intended to be heard. During the nineteenth century and the first part of the twentieth century most people knew the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and others only in arrangements either for keyboard or small ensembles. As interesting as many of these arrangements are, they cannot convey the power and musical interest of a full orchestra performing the same work. The important virtuoso soloists rarely had a chance to hear each other since they were seldom in the same city at the same time. Philip points out that this means that each performer retained their individual style without much influence from other performers. The heart of the book is the discussion of changes in style and performance practice of instrumentalists. By comparing performances by the same conductor with different orchestras and those by one orchestra under different conductors, Philip gives the reader a fascinating look at how great the changes have been in musical performance between the first and second halves of the twentieth century. His comparisons of Arturo Toscaninis performances with the La Scala Orchestra and the NBC Symphony are interesting, but the standards of most opera house orchestras until very recently could never compare with those of a major orchestra, so it is difficult to know how to attribute the differences. It would have been interesting to know his views on the changes that took place in performances with the NBC Symphony of the same work, such as Beethovens Coriolan Overture that was broadcast in 1938, 1944, 1946, 1949, and 1953. The constancy of conductor and orchestra would allow for a different type of comparison and open up new avenues of discussion. This idea is covered briefly in the discussions of the piano performances of Vladimir Horowitz and Artur Rubinstein, but most of the discussions revolve around the differences between the performances of different performers from different eras.

Hagerstown businessman Scott Hoover went hunting in South Africa last September but he wasnt on vacation. Hoover is vice president, director of East Coast operations and part-owner of Outdoor Connection, Inc., so his African trip was really an inspection tour and just part of his job (although the photos do show him smiling as he holds the horns of his trophy kudu and gemsbok). Hoovers company can arrange anything from trout fishing in Montana or cougar hunting in Utah to caribou in Labrador or alligator hunts in Florida. The most popular trips, says Hoover, are fishing and hunting in Alaska, marlin fishing in Mexicos Sea of Cortez, and Ontario fishing camps on lakes so remote that they are only accessible by float planes. Although the emphasis is on hunting and fishing, some of the outfitters also offer white water rafting, summer pack trips and dude ranch experiences during their off-season. Outdoor Connection was created by a Minnesota businessman, Bob Laddusaw, who liked to go on hunting and fishing trips. After people began asking him to help plan their trips, he started Sportsmans Adventures in 1986. In two years, the business had grown too big for one location, so he renamed it Outdoor Connection and began franchising the concept.
Hunting and fishing, and all those recreational activities people like to do in the out-of-doors, will be highlighted this week at the ninth annual Utah International Sportsmans Exposition. The show opens today at the South Towne Exposition Center and will run through Sunday. It has become the largest presentation of outdoor goods, services and information in Utah. This year more than 500 outdoor-related companies will be present.

People often ask me, “how relevant is the catwalk to the clothes most people actually wear?” As the spring/summer 97 round of shows gets under way, with London officially starting tomorrow, Milan next, then Paris and New York, the answer is that without designer level fashion, high street fashion would have no impetus to move forward. The clothes you see here are all available at a shopping centre or street near you, at prices that most people can afford. Yet they all owe their origins to the catwalks. Occasionally, a dress or shirt will be shamelessly copied. But on the whole, the high street looks to the catwalk for inspiration - for a mood or a look, if not an exact pocket detail or neckline. This autumn, the influence of the catwalks on the high street is as pronounced as ever. Walk into Miss Selfridge and you will be hit by a capsule collection of brightly coloured, zig-zag-patterned knitwear, a reflection of the Italian designer Missonis resurgence as a label to die for. Missonis knits are hand-crafted, life investment pieces with, of course, price tags to match. But if you want the look without the quality or the third mortgage, a cropped cotton/viscose Missoni-look sweater for pounds 25 is an effective one-season buy, guaranteed to update last winters wardrobe. Likewise, Gucci, the Italian label that has recently been resurrected from being synonymous with Eighties status dressing to the ultimate in high fashion. There is no suggestion that anyone would mistake the Gucci “look” for the real thing. A pure cashmere coat by the esteemed label is manufactured and tailored with absolute precision. To compare it with a coat of roughly similar design by Warehouse would be like comparing a Lamborghini to a Vauxhall Cavalier. Both are perfectly functional cars, but there the similarity ends. You get what you pay for. Gucci is in a league of its own; and the cream, pure wool, fake-fur-trimmed coat you see here is worth every one of its pounds 160. Another strong look for this autumn comes from New York and Ralph Lauren. The designer, who opens a flagship store in London later this year, took his influence from a street in London: Savile Row. When Claudia Schiffer walked down the runway in a midnight blue velvet tailored suit with shirt and gold tie, scores of fashion editors imagined themselves in her place. Of course, Ralph Lauren does not hold a monopoly on velvet suits. And Next might just as easily taken their inspiration from the Row as well. While the designer version can be altered to look as though it was made for you, out of the most luxurious silk velvet, Nexts suit costs a fraction of the price, at under pounds 150. And of course, good old mail order stalwart Racing Green has come up with the perfect fitted shirt, and its as much of a classic as the Ralph Lauren de luxe original. Back in Milan, Prada has been setting the pace, along with Gucci, for the past few seasons. The key look is minimal styling with quirky Seventies house-beautiful prints. For the Prada aficionado, there is no point if the label is not hand-sewn with the revered Milanese logo. But for anyone who just happens to like the abstract print look, there are numerous hommages on the high street. The best comes from Jane Norman, a family-run business owned by two sisters. They pride themselves on their awareness of catwalk trends. For them, the catwalk is extremely important. They respond to supplying and satisfying public demand, giving increasingly trend aware women catwalk looks at high street prices. The shirt dress pictured here hits just the right note. The transition from catwalk to high street does not always happen within the same season. Some trends take a while to filter through. David LodgeDavid Lodge was born on January 28, 1935, to working-class Catholic parents, William Frederick Lodge (a saxophonist and clarinetist in dance bands) and Rosalie Murphy Lodge. They lived on the outskirts of London. As a child, he lived through the darkest days of the blitz the German bombing attacks in 1940. Like many other schoolboys, he was evacuated to the countryside for the remainder of the war years. He grew up during postwar years of economic hardship. At age ten, he was enrolled in the St. Josephs Academy Catholic grammar school, and entered University College, London in 1952. He graduated with a Bachelors degree in English (with honors) in 1955 and a Masters degree in 1959. After a two-year stint in the Royal Armored Corps (1955-1957), he went on to earn a Ph.D. at the University of Birmingham and joined the English faculty in 1960. 1959 was also the year that he married Mary Frances Jacob and with whom he fathered two sons and a daughter. Lodge spent part of 1969 as a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He was assistant to the British Council in London and became Lecturer. In 1971-1973, he became Senior Lecturer and was an instructor from 1973-1976. In 1976, he was appointed professor of modern English literature at Birmingham and fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. In 1987,

he took early retirement from his university post to devote himself to his writing.Lodges first attempted novel The Devil, The World, and The Flesh focused on Catholic characters living in a small part of London. In fact, the entire novel, with its one-day time frame, urban wandering, parodies and allusions, is an homage to Joyces masterwork.Lodges fourth novel, Out of the Shelter (1970), is his most autobiographical work, based on a vacation that he spent visiting an aunt in Heidelberg in 1951. Lodge called the novel a mixture of Bildungsroman (or coming-of-age tale) and the Jamesian international novel of conflicting ethical and cultural codes. Emotionally scarred by the London blitz, the teenaged Timothy Young travels to Germany to visit his sister, who works for the U.S. Army of Occupation. There he is surprised to find, amid the ravages of war, a life of material luxury and sexual adventure. The latter forms the basis for much of the novels comedy.

For most of this century aluminium was mainly used by the construction industry in a supporting role, as the frames for modern windows. Instead of cubes supporting roofs on beams and columns in the traditional method of construction, this younger generation saw the potential for shaping pods, or shells, in the same way that Future Systems did for their NatWest Media Centre at Lords cricket ground. However, not everything has been designed as an egg - or a Teletubby. Allies Morrison put the fun back into functional with their use of fins that extrude from the glass facade of an extension at Goldsmiths College: these make for a dramatic entrance, and one which shelters the computer screens within from too much daylight. Roofs that unfurl like waves are used in very different ways by Chris Wilkinson at the Stratford Regional Station, and by Sir Norman Foster at the bus terminus in Greenwich, while Penoyre and Prasad made a decorative feature of the properties of unadorned aluminium in their timbered visitors centre at Dagenham, contrasting the materials to dramatic effect. As the century draws to a close there has been a lot of speculation about houses of the future. Will they have plasma walls that beam out works of art at the flick of a mouse? Death jolted a tranquil Thai island last week when Katherine Horton, a British holidaymaker, was beaten, probably raped, then left to die on Lamai beach, Koh Samui. I have known this beach ever since I can remember, and my father also knew it before me. When I came here as a child the little shop and the caravan park did not exist, and access was via a long twisting track that led off the main road. We came for holidays three and sometimes four times a year. I was taught to swim in the creek, and taught how to fish on the beach, and how to get sandworms, yabbies and pippies, which we used for our bait. My father knew the beach very well, and with the passing of time ! came to know it even better. As the old fishermen say, I was taught to read the beach, to spot the gutters for the whiting and flathead, to cast well out with a long beach rod when the tailor were running, to catch the blackfish in some of the deep holes in the creek, or when all else failed, to go after the large mudcrabs that lived around the mangroves. The supply of seafood was never a problem, but we only took as much as we needed. Any waste would make my father angry. I was never allowed to swim in the surf. This was accepted without question from ever since I can remember. Even in later years when in my teens, and when sometimes a school friend came on holidays with us, it was on the understanding that we only swam in the creek. Provided we kept well clear of the oyster-covered rocks on part of the northern bank there was no problem, and the dogs and I spent a great deal of our time in the water there, or the dogs waited patiently, digging themselves into the cooler part of the sand while I chased worms or yabbies at low water. We always came to the beach when the tailor were in season, and we always seemed to be there when the big sea mullet were on the boil and were caught with weighted jags and a well-aimed cast. Today with the number of fishermen that descend on the beach and the number of dangerous jags that fly through the air, this pastime has become as much of a hazard to the fisherman as it is to the mullet. Also, there are now always commercial fishermen with nets, lurking beyond the breakers.

Cameroon, Zaire, Malawi, Mozambique and Ethiopia similarly have fantastic opportunities for viewing wildlife but they too are outside the mainstream.
